Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was a highly influential Finnish designer, sculptor, and educator, renowned for his innovative work that blurred the boundaries between applied arts and fine arts. He is particularly celebrated for his contribution to glass design but also worked extensively with metal, wood, textiles, and porcelain.

Sarpaneva is best known for his artistic and industrial glass creations for the Finnish company Iittala. He extensively experimented with glass, developing new techniques and forms that were both aesthetically appealing and functional.

His early works from the 1950s, including series like "Lancet" (1952), "Orchid" (1954), and "Kayak" (1954), earned him international fame, including Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennials. He developed the "i-line" series (1956) for Iittala, characterized by vibrant glass colors and a modern aesthetic. He also designed the iconic Iittala logo with the lowercase "i".
The "Finlandia" series (1964) of textured glass vases, created using rough wooden molds, achieved another international success.
His "Festivo" candleholders (from 1964 onwards), with their characteristic ring stems, are iconic examples of Scandinavian design.
Later in his career, he collaborated with the Italian glassworks Venini in Murano, creating unique pieces of artistic glass.
