Mercury mirrors are a type of ancient mirror that uses a thin sheet of mercury to create a reflective surface.

Production process:

  1. A glass plate was cleaned and coated with a layer of tin.
  2. Mercury was poured onto the tin plate and distributed evenly, creating a reflective surface.
  3. Excess mercury was removed and the glass sealed with a lead or wooden rim.

Characteristics:

  • They offered a clearer, brighter reflection than metal or silver glass mirrors.
  • The manufacturing process was laborious and required craftsmanship.
  • They were expensive and accessible only to the wealthier classes.
