Giorgio de Chirico (Volos, Greece, 1888 – Rome, 1978) was one of the most important Italian painters of the 20th century and a key figure in the development of modern art. He is universally recognized as the founder of Metaphysical Painting. De Chirico developed Metaphysical Painting between 1910 and 1917, profoundly influencing the Surrealists and other subsequent movements.

The main subjects are solitary, sun-drenched, empty squares, often surrounded by arcades of classical Italian architecture (such as those he imagined or saw in Turin and Florence). Human figures are rare or absent, replaced by mannequins, statues, or cast shadows that suggest a presence but also an unsettling emptiness. The light is often sharp, unreal, and emanates from unknown sources, creating long, dramatic shadows and accentuating the sense of mystery and suspended time. In his compositions, everyday objects (such as biscuits, rubber gloves, or drawing tools) are arranged illogically or placed in unexpected settings (such as on a stage), creating a sense of unease and mystery. De Chirico often manipulates the laws of perspective, making spaces appear distorted or objects seem to exist in an unstable balance.
