Saverio Terruso (Monreale, 11 January 1939 – Milan, 3 March 2003) was an Italian painter known for his vibrant and expressive style, often depicting landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He was a leading figure in the 20th century Italian art scene, leaving behind a rich legacy of paintings and a lasting impact on the art world.
Born in Monreale, Sicily, in 1939, Terruso showed an early aptitude for art. He attended the Palermo School of Art, where he honed his skills and developed his artistic sensitivity. In 1958 he moved to Milan to further his artistic research, enrolling at the prestigious Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
Terruso's artistic style evolved throughout his career, but was consistently characterized by its liveliness, expressiveness, and bold use of color. He was influenced by various artistic movements, including impressionism, expressionism and post-impressionism.
Terruso's paintings often featured landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His landscapes captured the essence of the Sicilian countryside, with its rolling hills, lush vegetation and bright colors. His still lifes showed a variety of everyday objects, transformed into captivating compositions through his masterful use of light and shadow. His portraits, often of friends and family, revealed a profound insight into the human condition.
Alongside his artistic practice, Terruso was also a devoted teacher. He taught painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo, at the Academy of Carrara and finally at his alma mater, the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. He has inspired and mentored numerous aspiring artists, leaving a lasting impact on the art world.
Terruso's legacy lies in his vibrant and expressive paintings, which continue to fascinate art enthusiasts today. His works are exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Museo della Permanente in Milan and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Palermo.
