Oil painting on cardboard of a traditional Milanese scene, created by Antonio Vettore Cargnel in the early 20th century
Ø 30 cm h 24 cm including frame
Vittore (or Vettore) Cargnel was a Venetian painter who left an important mark on the Italian artistic panorama between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Mestre in 1872 and passed away in Milan in 1931, Cargnel was able to combine a solid academic education with a sensitivity to light and the typically Venetian atmosphere.
After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Cargnel entered the studio of Cesare Laurenti, a highly regarded painter of the time. This experience influenced him profoundly, orienting him towards a very popular pictorial trend, which we also find in the works of Luigi Nono.
Initially, Cargnel devoted himself mainly to portraiture, capturing the expressiveness of his subjects with great skill. Later, his attention shifted to landscapes, particularly views of his beloved Venice.
Cargnel's landscape production is characterized by a quick and loose brushstroke, which allows him to best convey the brightness and atmosphere of the scenes represented. His canvases are often dominated by large open spaces, populated by human figures that move naturally.
Vittore Cargnel's work is today rediscovered and appreciated for its freshness and its ability to evoke past atmospheres. His paintings are present in numerous public and private collections, and are regularly offered at art auctions.
