Pair of terracotta sculptures with anthropomorphic mask decorations, made in the 1950s

Ø cm 27 Ø cm 17 h cm 22

Pair of Italian-made terracotta decorative elements, from the 1950s, featuring sculptural workmanship inspired by classical ornamental motifs.

The front features an anthropomorphic mask framed by scrolls and topped with a large fluted palmette. The deliberately tactile modeling and unglazed surface in natural terracotta tones give the two pieces a character that is both archaic and sculptural.

The reinterpretation of motifs from classical and Renaissance architecture is part of the revival of craftsmanship and decorative arts that characterized some Italian production in the postwar period.

Created as ornamental elements, today they can be viewed as small decorative sculptures, bringing the material strength and irregularity of artisanal craftsmanship into contemporary spaces.
