Fausto Pratella (Naples, 1905–1964) was an Italian painter who continued the great tradition of the Neapolitan landscape school with a more modern and intimate sensibility. The son of an artist (his father was the renowned Attilio Pratella, and his brother Paolo was also a painter), Fausto succeeded in carving out a prominent role for himself not merely as the heir to an important name, but as a poetic interpreter of Mediterranean light. While his father Attilio was the master of views teeming with life and marked contrasts, Fausto chose a more understated path; his painting lies within the tradition of late Impressionism. His brushstrokes are less fragmented than his father’s, tending to create more homogeneous surfaces and almost suspended atmospheres.

His palette is delicate, dominated by dusty blues, pearly grays, and pastel tones. He was a painter of “half-light,” capable of capturing the moisture in the air above the sea or the quiet of a sunny afternoon. Compared with nineteenth-century Neapolitan painting, Fausto’s works are often more solitary. Even when he depicts iconic places, he does so with an emotional detachment that almost recalls Metaphysical painting filtered through realism.
