Contardo Barbieri (1900-1966) was an important Italian painter who played a significant role in the 20th century art scene, particularly within the Novecento Italiano movement. His artistic path was marked by a deep connection with his native land, by a skilful use of light and color and by a dedication to capturing the essence of everyday life.
Born in Broni, Pavia, in 1900, Barbieri immersed himself in the artistic world from a young age. He enrolled at the Brera Academy in Milan in 1919, where he was profoundly influenced by the teachings of Emilio Gola, Daniele Ranzoni and Emilio Longoni. These famous artists instilled in him a keen appreciation for light, color and the realist tradition. Throughout the 1920s, the artist's work evolved by exploring various artistic styles. Initially attracted by the Lombard figurative tradition of the late nineteenth century, he progressively adopted a more solid and synthetic formal approach, influenced by the contemporary research of the Novecento Italiano group.
Novecento Italiano, was an artistic movement that emerged in the 1920s, which sought to revitalize Italian art and establish a distinct national identity. Barbieri joined the group in 1926, fully embracing its principles of realism, clarity and connection with Italian heritage.
Barbieri's mature style was characterized by a harmonious balance between realism and modernity. His paintings often depicted scenes of everyday life, capturing the essence of rural landscapes, intimate family moments and the quiet beauty of the Italian countryside. He skillfully used light and color to create a sense of depth, atmosphere and emotional resonance.
The painter participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, and received prestigious awards, such as the Bergamo Prize in 1939. His works were acquired by important Italian art collections, including the Gallery of Modern Art of Milan and the National Gallery. of Modern Art in Rome.
