Perugia, the capital of the Umbria region in Italy, boasts a rich history of ceramics dating back to Etruscan times. Over the centuries, the city has established itself as a renowned center for the production of exquisite majolica and other ceramic wares, characterized by vibrant colors, intricate designs and unique craftsmanship.

The roots of the Perugian ceramic tradition can be traced back to the Etruscans, who excelled in ceramics and sculpture. Their expertise in working with clay laid the foundation for the thriving ceramic industry that would emerge in Perugia during the Middle Ages.

During the 15th century the nearby city of Deruta emerged as a center of ceramic production and its influence extended as far as Perugia. Deruta majolica, characterized by tin-glazed terracotta and elaborate hand-painted decorations, gained widespread popularity and became synonymous with Umbrian ceramics.

Perugian artisans had a significant role in shaping the style of Deruta majolica. They introduced new techniques and motifs, such as the use of luster and the incorporation of Renaissance and Baroque artistic elements. Perugia's ceramic workshops produced a wide range of objects, including tableware, vases, decorative tiles, and religious figures, all showcasing the city's artistic prowess.
