Emperor Tongzhi (1856–1875) was the ninth emperor of the Qing Dynasty, who reigned from 1862 to 1875. He ascended the throne at a young age, and his reign was marked by the Tongzhi Restoration, an attempt to revitalize Qing rule after a period of decline. Although the emperor himself had little direct influence, his mother, the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi, played a significant role in these efforts.
